How to get free games on Steam

Hunting for FREE steam keys on the internet is a pain. A lot of sites will try to scam you, but if you look hard enough, you'll be able to grab some steam keys and free games.
Here is a list of ways to get free games / steam keys / DLCs.
1. FRAIST
About
FRAIST gives gamers the chance to instantly get free games and DLC's. Sign up for free to get a weekly email to three loot boxes. Choose the box you think contains the loot and if you choose the correct one, the loot is yours.
Gifts include various indie games, AAA titles and also in-game loot and various other in-game goodies (DLCs, in-game items, skins, in-game currency etc.)
How it works
  1. Get a weekly email - Sign up to receive a weekly email with the link to your loot boxes.
  2. Choose a loot box - You'll get 3 choices. Choose the one you think contains the loot.
  3. Keep the loot - If you choose correctly, you get to keep what’s inside.
Fraist also offers a premium tier for gamers who want to get better quality, more expensive loot more often, but since your question was related to free steam keys, I won't go into further details. For those interested, you can read more about the premium features here.
Beta access
Fraist is currently in closed beta test phase so access is limited but if you are lucky, you can also get a closed beta invite code by following @FraistGames on Twitter as we do random key drops there.
2. FREE GAMES ON STEAM
While this is probably not a “free steam keys” thing, I think it's worth mentioning it as you can find quite a few free games here.
About
As mentioned above, you won't get a key here, but you'll be able to download free games for STEAM. You can sort games by genre and tags like “what’s being played”, “trending”, “top seller” (still free games though) etc.
2. /R/GIFTOFGAMES
About
Inspired by /r/RandomKindness and /r/RandomActsofGaming, GoG is a place to give away and request games and game-related items.
While you won't be able to hoard vast amounts of games or keys, you can try and request a game of your choice. Make sure you read and respect the rules for posting on this subreddit.

4. GIVEAWAYS
This part is self-explanatory, but there are a lot of giveaways happening in the gaming community. You can find giveaways on Facebook gaming communities and on Twitter, but a special mention goes to:
5. MISCELLANEOUS
To wrap up the list and answer, I also need to mention a website called FREE STEAM KEYS. It's a great website where you can grab some free game keys, so it's worth a look.
Finally, I never had any experience with sites where you need to complete specific tasks to obtain credit which can later be exchanged for games and keys, but according to other answers and the gaming community, it can end up being a tedious slog to get a few keys.
I think this should give you some options. Hope this helps!
IMPORTANT - While it's ok to “Login with STEAM”, never trust a site that asks for your STEAM username and password (or for any other gaming platforms like Battle.net, Origin and so on). Never give out your login details to anyone and avoid such sites as they most probably will try to steal your account. Use common sense, these kind of websites are relatively easy to spot.
